John: What's the matter, May? You seem depressed since you talked to your mom this morning. Is something wrong with her?
May : I think my mom has trouble being a mother-in-law.
John : What's the problem?
May : You know, my brother has been married for 3 years and they have 2 kids now.
My sister-in-law is a full-time, stay-at-home mom.
But my mom says that whenever she visits her house, she sees it's an unholy mess.
There are papers, toys, clothes, and junk all over the house.
And the kitchen has dirty dishes stacked everywhere.
John : So, what does she want to do about it?
May : Well, that's the thing. She really wants to help her by giving her some pointers but at the same time she's afraid that would make her look like an interfering mother-in-law.
John : Well, I understand how hard it must be for your mom to hold her tongue.
May : But I think the best way is staying out of it and keeping the relationship as it is.

올케는 일을 하지 않고 집에 있는 전업 주부거든.
그런데 엄마 말로는 엄마가 그 집에 갈 때마다 집이 정말 엉망이라는 거야.
종이며 장난감이며 옷가지며 온갖 쓰레기들이 집에 널려 있다는 거지.
게다가 부엌에는 지저분한 접시들이 산처럼 여기 저기 쌓여있고.
John : 그래서 어떻게 하고 싶으시대?
May : 글쎄, 그게 문제야. 엄마는 몇 가지를 지적해서 올케를 도와주고 싶긴 하지만 또 그러면 엄마가 쓸데없는 일에 참견하는 시어머니처럼 보일까 봐서 걱정인 걱정인 거야.
John : 글쎄,. 어머님이 잠자코 참고 계시는 것이 힘들 것이라는 건 이해해.
하지만 최선의 방법은 관여하지 말고 물러서서 현재의 관계를 계속 좋게 유지시키는 거라고 생각해.
